a free documentary film series for people who like sex
curated by Clarisse Thorn
+ Q. “What is being sex-positive?”
+ A. “Defining sex on my terms.”
+ A. “Understanding my sexual needs.”
+ A. “Being in charge of my sexual experiences.”
Explore sexuality in a new way by joining us for a series of films about positive sexuality and sexual identity. This free documentary series will create a new space to discuss sex, culture, and sexual fun! Each film will be accompanied by delicious snacks and followed by relevant conversation. The Jane Addams Hull-House Museum is pleased to host this series as a new expression of the Hull-House Settlement’s historic advocacy for sex education.
We spice up every second and fourth Tuesday by screening another documentary with a positive, informative spin on human sexuality. The series will showcase diverse experiences, orientations, and choices. Planned films cover:
+ bisexuality,
+ S&M,
+ polyamory,
+ swinging,
+ transpeople,
+ homosexuality,
+ heterosexuality,
+ the history of sex,
+ and so much more!
(The 2009 film list is available here, and the 2011-2012 list is available here.)

If only I were in Chicago, this sounds like it would be quite enlightening. :) Ironically, a few hours ago I had just posted on the topic of positive/accurate depictions of SM in popular media. I’m not nearly as well-versed in the indie film arena though. Hmm, I wonder how many of these NetFlix carries. Not many, I’d wager.
Yes! I AM in Chicago and I would love to attend this. I’m in SWOP-Chicago and I have a separate blog on Blogger, La Libertine’s Salon. I will be promoting this.
Is there a website that we can downlaod some of these movies from?
@ Aallecks: Sorry, but I only have permission to screen these documentaries once each, and in very limited circumstances. Many of the films are in the hands of distributors who haven’t yet released them on DVD, etc. There are some that you can buy from the distributors — “Kinsey”, for instance, can be purchased from The American Experience website; “When Two Won’t Do” can likewise be purchased from Picture This Productions. There are one or two that are free to view online — for instance, “Red Without Blue”. Google can get as much information as you need for any particular film. If anyone wants to screen one of these movies but can’t find distributor information, they should feel free to email me and I’ll put them in touch with the distributor — email: clarisse dot thorn at gmail dot com.
Does anybody know when this will be out on DVD?
Also, are there any projections as to attendance in Chicago compared to the size of the theater? In other words, will this be too packed to be able to see it?
@ Zoom: As I said in response to Aallecks, I only have permission to screen these documentaries once each, and in very limited circumstances. I will not be releasing the series on DVD, but in some cases, you can purchase the movies from the distributors.
Attendance has been high, but we’re currently experimenting with a model by which you can reserve a seat if you RSVP. I encourage you to email me at clarisse dot thorn at gmail dot com if you’d like to join the film series mailing list. That way, you will receive each movie invitation, and for some movies you will also receive the purchasing information.
